I am unable to access bios on start up. F10 does not work and no cursor appears in the right hand corner. Any thoughts?

F1 sometimes does the trick. It is operating normally besides this?

Yes, it was operating normally (just reformatted and no OS at the moment). I did manage to dig out some info at the support site for Compaq. I saw repeated suggestions to unplug and remove the batteries and let it sit for 30 minutes and then put it back together. So, will give this a try.

You may have accidentally deleted the Non-DOS setup partition. Check the compaq website for F-10 setup and Diagnostic repair disks.
Flash your BIOS at your own risk.

I would agree.

I had that problem here recently with a Presario 7222ES where the F10 Partition was corrupted and the F1/F10 wouldn't function as intended. I went to HP/Compaq and downloaded the update for this machine and all is well.

You need to go to the HP website and download the appropriate software. As mentioned the F10 option (diagnostics/BIOS) is on a hidden partition of located on the hard drive.

Go here
No you can have the fun of deciphering which of the 26 versions you actually have........

I hate it in any shape or form. I need to find info on their "support" <chuckle> section sometimes...

Well edwin between you tackling the HP side and me tackling the Compaq side we are doing a pretty good job at providing better support for their products then they want to do themselves.

And soupy - At some point hopefully we wont have to direct people to HP/Compaq. I am collecting info as quickly as possible and putting it up on my site.
