I think the antivirus in the BIOS, where present, only protects the BIOS and warns and/or prevents changes to the boot area of the hard drive. You can disable this, which is usually what I do myself, but you should have up-to-date anti-virus software installed on your hard drive to give you a more complete protection. Several people I know have had problems with hard disk and BIOS infection due to viruses bypassing often outdated virus protection.
